Italian Cinema – Cinema of the Mediterranean Through the Italian Lens

Study Abroad in Sicily, Italy students enrolled in the Cinema of the Mediterranean Through the Italian Lens course are extended the unique opportunity to actively participate in the Annual Taormina International Film Festival. Students receive passes to attend all lectures, screenings, award ceremonies, interviews and festival events along with the Italian university students who participate in Cinema Campus Taormina.

Study Abroad in Sicily, Italy students enrolled in the Cinema of the Mediterranean Through the Italian Lens course are extended the unique opportunity to actively participate in the Annual Taormina International Film Festival. Students receive passes to attend all lectures, screenings, award ceremonies, interviews and festival events along with the Italian university students who participate in Cinema Campus Taormina. Students play an active role in participating in the Festival and selected students are invited to vote on the short film competition. Earphones are provided for simultaneous translation of lecturers. Course Description:

Study Abroad in Italy students enrolled in the Cinema of the Mediterranean Through the Italian Lens during the Summer Semester or June Short Term Program are the only non-Italian university students invited to participate in the Cinema Campus Taormina and Master Classes organized by the Taormina International Film Festival during the Festival in June. The festival has been an annual event since 1954 and draws an audience of internationally renowned film specialists. Film screenings are featured in the 2000+ Greek Theater just steps from campus. Students meet with film directors, actors actresses, writers and producers. Earphones are provided for synchronous translation of the lectures, seminars and workshops. Along with participation in the Master Classes of the Festival the course includes daily class lectures and discussions in English with viewings of international films. The course is taught in English and films have English subtitles. Class lectures explore the rich, diverse Mediterranean region by analyzing the similarities and differences amongst the many cultures represented. Focus is on the people, history, economics, languages and politics of the region as seen through the Italian perspective. Course topics include Reunification, World War II, the image and role of women, morality and the Church, the Mafia, and the delicate balance of multiculturalism in the South.

This course may meet the requirements for an elective course credit in Literature, Cinema, Comparative Literature, Women’s Studies, Mediterranean Studies, Multicultural Studies or Humanities. No prerequisite. Students are required to keep a film journal noting impressions, observations and analysis of films viewed: a final paper is also required.
