Cinema of the Mediterranean Through the Italian Lens
Course lectures explore the rich, diverse Mediterranean region by analyzing the similarities and differences amongst the many Mediterranean cultures represented in film. Focus is on the people, history, economics, languages and politics of the region as seen through the Italian perspective. Course topics include Reunification, World War II, the image and role of women, morality and the Church, the Mafia, and the delicate balance of multiculturalism in the South. This course may meet the requirements for an elective course credit in Mediterranean Studies, Multicultural Studies or Humanities. Films viewed have English subtitles for course taught in English and Italian subtitles for course taught in Italian. No previous study required.

This course examines the many facets of and from Italian women beginning from the Resorgimento (19th century Italian unification) up to the present. Through literature and cinema the historical roles of Italian women and the changing position of present day women will be explored. Readings are in translation (English) and films will be viewed with English subtitles for the course taught in English. Readings are in Italian and films are shown with Italian subtitles for the course taught in Italian. No previous study required.
