Mafia, a regional, national or global issue?
The course examines the multi-faceted system of organized crime in Southern Italy, in particular Sicily, through an interdisciplinary approach beginning with the historical background and then focusing on the economic, sociological, and political global impact. Although the course focuses on the Sicilian Mafia, students will also examine the Calabrian Ndrangheta and the Neapolitan Camorra as well as contemporary global organized crime organizations. Students study diverse historical documents/interviews, and attend on-site lectures. A service learning component with a non-profit Anti-Mafia organization is included.

One of Italy’s most noteworthy historical events of the 19th century, next to the Unification of the country, was the Great Migration. Three waves of Italian migration to North America occurred begining with the first between 1861 and 1900; each wave has been unique and offers cultural and historical insight to both Italy and North America then and now. Through media, cinema and literary representations, historical and cultural perspectives along with stereotypes and current issues such as the “Brain Drain” phenomena will be critically scrutinized and discussed.
